Training is an ability that an individual may have the talent for, however, there is a need to develop and upskill to perform with efficiency, confidence and to create impactful learning.
The methodology of training, be it the content, the interaction, the timing, choice of training aids, delivery methods are the science of training, and each one’s flair and style of delivering becomes the art, hence, TRAINING IS A SCIENCE AND ART. Effective training is all about striking the equilibrium between science and art after understanding your audience.
To face tomorrow with the methods of yesterday may not ring in success. So, the first step for a trainer is to become a learner himself/herself. One should be open to acquiring knowledge from books, videos, audience, peers, and every session delivered. The process must go on, the learning must continue. Every lesson learned needs to be applied practically. Choosing which learning to apply at the appropriate time, to what kind of audience, is a choice each trainer makes individually, resulting in varied levels of success. Understanding the outcome that each methodology results in is another key factor to be considered. Training the trainer in oneself, requires extra-ordinary listening, good observation, efficient implementation, and prompt improvisation skills. A good trainer can hear the horse speaking but a great trainer can hear the horse whisper.
The crowning glory to each session are the 3 ‘E’s of the trainer – Energy, enthusiasm, and excitement. These are potently contagious, resulting in an elevated response from your audience. A trainer should never forget that training is a responsibility, an unsaid promise, a transfer of one of the most precious investments that he/she makes in himself/herself and the audience makes in the trainer.
